Kid Quote of the Week

Zane (handing me a plastic bowl with a rubber ducky inside): "Mama, here is some bessert (dessert) I made for you."

Me: "Wow! What is it?"

Zane: "It's a duck that I shot myself and then cooked."

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 11) - Our Last Day in Yosemite

Our last day in Yosemite we hiked to Bridalveil Falls and spent some time at the Happy Isles Nature Center. Wyatt loved the exhibit with all of the animal sounds and tracks.

After we got back to our campsite, the boys spent the late afternoon playing while Danny and I started packing the car for the drive home. As you can tell, they had a lot of fun playing in the dirt and on the rocks!

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 10) - Mariposa Sequoia Grove

Today was the day the Griffins had to drive back to Pasadena. We spent our last morning with them hiking through the Mariposa Sequoia Grove. The kids loved the big trees - especially the ones you walk inside!

It was such a blessing to share part of our vacation with Brad, Missy and their girls! Wyatt and Colter loved playing with Anna and Kara ("Na-Na" and "Ra-Ra" to Colter). We are so grateful that God continues to give us opportunities to share life with them, even though we live so far away.

We drove back up to Glacier Point that evening so that Danny could take some more pictures at sunset. I can't believe both boys are actually smiling in this picture!

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 9) - Yosemite Valley

We drove down to Yosemite Valley, parked the cars and spent the day exploring "The Valley." We shopped at the Ansel Adams Gallery, ate ice cream at Curry Village, hiked to Lower Yosemite Falls, ate pizza at Degnans and, most importantly, took showers and washed clothes at Housekeeping Camp. The kids also went to a "Wee Wild Ones" Ranger program where they learned about butterflies. It was a great day!
We ended the day with a drive up to Glacier Point where Danny took some pictures of the valley with the full moon. You can see Yosemite Falls and the lights of Yosemite Valley in the picture above.

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 8) - Adventures at Tamarack Flat Campground

Our new campsite at Tamarack Flat was perfect. In the midst of a crowded Yosemite National Park, this campground had surprisingly few people. Our campsite was nice and spacious with lots of areas for the kids to explore.

Colter had lots of fun splashing in the creek near our campsite and loved the big pinecone that we found underneath our picnic table!

Wyatt and Anna spent quite a while walking around the campsite looking a trees and rocks through their binoculars. But they thought it was really funny when they discovered they could look at each other through the binoculars!

We love sitting by the campfire and reading stories in the tent before bed. Wyatt says one of his favorite things about camping is snuggling up in the tent with the sleeping bags!

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 8) - Dog Lake

The next day Danny and Brad took Anna, Kara, Wyatt and Colter on a morning hike to Dog Lake. Then we packed up and headed to our last campsite - one a little closer to Yosemite Valley so that we could spend the rest of our trip exploring that part of the park.

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 7) - Toulumne Meadows

Wyatt and Colter enjoyed our hike back down from Glen Aulin. We stopped near one of the waterfalls to have a snack.

This was our campsite at Toulumne Meadows Campground. It had just opened that day for the summer season. Wyatt and Colter enjoyed using the rocks as roads for their cars!

Danny took this picture at sunset from an overlook near our campsite.

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 6) - Legendary High Country Mosquitoes

The Yosemite High Country is famous for two things - beautiful scenery and large mosquitoes. We thought we were prepared for the mosquitoes, but we were wrong! As we hiked closer to the campsite they began to swarm. By the time we set up the tent they were so thick we could barely see what we were doing. We had brought repellent, but it was only helping for 15 or 20 minutes and then we'd need to reapply. We spent most of the evening inside the tents trying to keep ourselves, and most importantly the kids, from being eaten alive! We decided to cut our backpacking trip short by a day and hike back down the next morning.

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 6) - Breathtaking High Country Views

Well, the guidebooks were right - the views and scenery on the hike were absolutely breathtaking! The trail followed a river and there were several waterfalls, including one near our campsite. We walked over huge granite slabs, beside roaring rapids and through forested areas. Danny and I both agreed that it was the most beautiful hike we had ever done. It's always challenging hiking with a toddler and preschooler, but watching their faces as they experience these incredible examples of God's creation makes it worth all of the effort. Below are just a few of our favorite pictures out of the many Danny took during this hike.

Wyatt has been fascinated with waterfalls for the last several months. He loved the fact that there seemed to be a waterfall around every bend in the trail! Colter called them "wa-wa-fa."

Danny took this moonlight picture of the waterfall near our campsite. It was almost a full moon that evening.

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 6) - Backpacking in the Yosemite High Country

The next morning we headed out for our three-day, two-night backpacking trip to Glen Aulin High Sierra Camp. It was going to be a 6-mile hike to the campsite, but everything we had read about the hike said that the views were worth the walk, so we were ready to go!

Kara and Colter enjoyed the walk in their backpack carriers. Wyatt and Anna walked most of the way (notice Wyatt's hiking stick, backpack and hat!) and then rode on Brad or Danny's shoulders when they got too tired. They were excellent little hikers!

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 5) - Finally in Yosemite

After five days of driving we finally made it to Yosemite - and it was beautiful! Despite the fact that several of the campgrounds in the high country were still closed due to the large amount of snow Yosemite received this winter, we were blessed to find a great site a White Wolf Campground. There was a creek to explore and rocks to climb so the kids were all very happy!

Colter was trying hard to do everything that Wyatt did, which included climbing some rather large rocks. He could climb them just fine, the problem was getting down. He would climb to the top and then shout "Jump!". That was OK as long as someone was right there to catch him, but I could envision the moment someone wasn't there and he made the decision to just jump anyway! In the hope of avoiding disaster, we made a quick rule that Colter could only climb "Colter-sized rocks" so that if he did decide to jump by himself he wouldn't fall too far! : )

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 4) - Mount Whitney

The next day we finished packing, loaded all of the kids into the cars and drove a few hours north to a campground near the base of Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the continental US. This would get us just a couple of hours from Yosemite and allow us to get into the park early enough to get a campsite. The kids enjoyed exploring all of the rocks around our campsite and eating Danny's famous "backpacker pizza."

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 3) - The Griffin's

We made it to the Griffin's house in Pasadena the afternoon of July 4th. Their girls, Anna (almost 4) and Kara (11 months), were very welcoming to our travel weary boys. We enjoyed a 4th of July picnic with some of Brad and Missy's friends from church and then got the kids to bed as we finished our preparations for a week of camping.

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 3) - Joshua Tree National Park

One of our last stops on the way to Pasadena was Joshua Tree National Park in California. We didn't have high expectations for Joshua Tree, but we were pleasantly surprised. It is an absolutely spectacular area of desert vegetation and unusual rock formations. We ate lunch at one of the picnic areas, the boys did some exploring around the rocks and then we finished our drive to Pasadena (while both boys napped!).

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 2) - Petrified Forest National Park

Along the way to Yosemite we stopped at several other National Parks, the first being Petrified Forest in Arizona. We didn't stay very long, but we all enjoyed the break from driving. The boys especially liked the overlooks and seeing the big "tree rocks" as Wyatt called them. We got back in the car refreshed and ready for more driving!

Our Yosemite Adventure (Day 1) - The Drive Begins...

On July 2, just two days after graduation, we left for a two week vacation to Yosemite National Park. Since we decided to drive instead of fly, half of the adventure was just getting there!

We broke the trip up into several days and had lots of new books and activities for the many hours in the car. Wyatt and Colter did a great job and we enjoyed getting to see so much beautiful country!

We took three days to drive from Dimmitt to Pasadena where we stayed with our good friends, the Griffins. The next day their family, Brad, Missy, Anna and Kara would drive with us to Yosemite where we would spend the next seven days hiking, camping and backpacking.
